The choice of fire alarm systems depends on the building structure, the purpose and use of the building. All existing buildings except domestic premises are subject to The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Responsible Person, as defined in the order, has to conduct a fire risk assessment. The FRA will decide the appropriate British standard necessary to provide a suitable and sufficient solution for the premises. The enforcement body is the Fire and Rescue Service and the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLC).
Emergency lighting is normally required to operate fully automatically and give illumination of a sufficiently high level to enable all occupants to evacuate the premises safely.
Emergency lighting is a general term and is sub-divided into emergency escape lighting and standby lighting.
Emergency escape lighting provides illumination for the safety of people leaving a location by making sure the routes are sufficiently lit including illuminated fire exit signs

Standby lighting is part of the emergency lighting system provided to enable normal activities to continue substantially unchanged.
